Kitting-out your Team

Simply identifying the hardware and software your team needs to acquire before starting its project can be a significant task. Therefore you might be able to save yourself some time by basing your team's shopping list on the one we produced for the OSPACS team featured in our book.

Although not all of the kit they used might be suitable your project or team, it should at least give you some idea of the sort of things you need to find and the options you need to consider.

The OSPACS Team setup a Software Project Environment for five developers and organised their shopping list into the following sections:

  • Hardware Shopping List
  • Software to Buy
  • Software Supplied with other Products
  • Freely Available Software
Please help us keep these lists up-to-date by sending us your feedback. Include in your email links to the websites of any alternative suppliers you might want to propose as well details about their products as well as their cost and benefits.

Install TFS on the 32-bit version of Microsoft Server 2003 because the Application Tier doesn't support WOW64. Visual Studio 2005 is a 32 bit Windows application so you will not experience any performance gains by installing the Client Tier on a 64-bit machine. Likewise, performance gains on multicore or multiprocessor PCs will be limited to those areas of VSTS that make of use multiple threads, like SQL Server (Data Tier), and the code compilation tools.

Software to Buy

We recommend Agile teams to buy Visual Studio Team Suite rather than the separate Developer, Tester and Architect editions as the licence restricts the use of these products to a single named individual which prevents people from having more than one role in a team.

Despite its name the TFS Workgroup Edition can be used within a domain or workgroup. It is functionally the same as the full product, but is limited to five users. If you have more than five people connecting to your Team Foundation Server then you will need to buy a separate TFS Licence as well as a TFS CAL for each person. You will also need to buy a licence and CALs for the Windows SQL Server that hosts your TFS data tier.
